East Indian Sandalwood Oil (EISO) is a novel, multi-functional botanical drug candidate with an exceptional therapeutic and safety profile targeting important diseases.

Novel Botanical Drug

East Indian Sandalwood Oil (EISO) is a complex mixture of small-molecular weight compounds, mostly sesquiterpenoids, derived from the distillation of the tree heartwood. The main components are two isomers, alpha- and beta-santalol which together comprise about 70 percent of the oil. Cultivated sandalwood trees, a hemi-parasitic species, take up to 15 years to mature and wild grown trees can take 50 years to reach an oil-bearing level of maturity.

EISO has been used for thousands of years in Asia as a traditional medicine. It’s been applied topically for a range of skin conditions as well as used orally for urinary tract infections and other systemic conditions.

East Indian Sandalwood Oil (EISO) has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine and extensively around the world as a fragrance and flavoring agent. Unlike many botanicals, such as tea tree oil or Western Australian sandalwood oil (which contains the irritant farnesol), EISO is both non-irritating and non-sensitizing and has an excellent safety profile. EISO is very well tolerated on the skin, providing an important advantage when developing products for prolonged use on delicate or damaged skin, such as in the treatment of pediatric eczema. It is unusual for a product like EISO, with such potent biological activity, to be so well tolerated – a fraction of a percent concentration easily kills most fungi and gram positive bacteria (even drug-resistant bacteria such as MRSA), yet can be safely applied to the skin in its undiluted (100 percent) form.

Santalis has extensively tested its over-the-counter products in humans for both safety and efficacy. The same EISO that can be found in these OTC products is also being rigorously evaluated in placebo-controlled, double-blinded studies under FDA regulations, ensuring the most stringent quality and safety standards across our range of products.
